What are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear above traditional search results for some queries. They synthesize an answer from multiple web sources and link to those sources, making inclusion a distinct goal from ranking first organically.

Because the Overview sits above the organic listings, a page ranking in position one can still lose the click. The response is to compete for the Overview itself rather than to ignore it.

How are sources selected?

Google draws Overview sources from its existing index, favouring pages that answer the specific question clearly and come from sources it already treats as reliable. Strong conventional SEO remains the prerequisite, not a separate track.

There is no separate submission process. Everything that makes a page a good organic result also makes it a plausible Overview source.

Structure passages so they can be lifted

Answer the question in the first two sentences under a relevant heading. Overviews are assembled from passages, so a self-contained answer positioned directly under a matching heading is the most reliable structure.

  • Phrase the heading as the question a user would type.
  • Answer immediately, in 40-60 words, with no preamble.
  • Keep the answer free of references to earlier sections.
  • Follow with detail for readers who want more.

Lean on structured data

Google reads schema markup natively, so structured data is disproportionately valuable here. Article, FAQPage, HowTo, Product, and BreadcrumbList markup all make it easier to identify what your page answers.

SchemaBest used onNote
Article / BlogPostingEditorial contentCarries author and dates
FAQPagePages with real, visible FAQsMust match on-page content exactly
HowToStep-by-step processesRich results deprecated; still aids extraction
ProductCommercial pagesPrices and availability must be accurate
BreadcrumbListEvery pageEstablishes hierarchy

Cover the follow-up questions

Overviews frequently address a cluster of related questions rather than one. Pages that answer the natural follow-ups in adjacent sections are more likely to be drawn on more than once.

Look at the "People also ask" entries for your target query and make sure each has a real heading and a real answer somewhere in your content.

Keep the classic fundamentals strong

Core Web Vitals, mobile usability, clean indexation, and internal linking all still matter. AI Overviews draw from the same index as organic results, so weakening the fundamentals weakens both surfaces at once.

  • LCP under 2.5 seconds.
  • CLS under 0.1.
  • INP under 200 milliseconds.
  • Server-rendered content in the raw HTML.
  • A valid, current sitemap and correct canonicals.

Frequently asked questions

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

You can limit how your content is used in generated summaries with the nosnippet and max-snippet robots directives, but these also affect ordinary search snippets. Most sites are better served by competing for inclusion than by opting out.

Do AI Overviews reduce click-through rates?

They can, particularly for informational queries where the Overview fully answers the question. The strategic response is to be cited within the Overview, and to target queries where a user still needs to visit a site to act.

Does schema markup guarantee inclusion?

No. Schema improves machine understanding of your content but guarantees nothing. It is best understood as removing an obstacle rather than creating an advantage.
