How does ChatGPT decide what to cite?

When ChatGPT searches the web, it issues queries against Bing's index, retrieves candidate pages, and grounds its answer in passages from those pages. Citation therefore requires being in Bing's index first, then having passages that cleanly answer the question.

This makes ChatGPT visibility unusually tractable. The first gate is a checkbox — are you in Bing — and the second is editorial.

If your site is not indexed in Bing, nothing else on this page will help. Verify the domain in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap before anything else.

1. Get indexed in Bing

Verify your domain in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and request indexing for your most important URLs. ChatGPT's search cannot retrieve what Bing has not indexed, making this the highest-priority action for ChatGPT visibility.

Compare a site: query on Bing against the same query on Google. A large gap means indexation problems worth investigating in the Coverage report.

2. Allow OpenAI's crawlers

Explicitly allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, and ChatGPT-User in robots.txt, and confirm no CDN or firewall rule blocks them. Managed bot-protection rules block unfamiliar agents by default and are a frequent, invisible cause of zero visibility.

Check your server logs for those user agents over the last 30 days. Zero requests means something upstream is refusing them.

3. Lead with the answer

Put a self-contained 40-60 word answer immediately under each heading. ChatGPT quotes passages, so an answer that stands alone without surrounding context is far more likely to be selected and reproduced.

Test this by reading any section in isolation. If it only makes sense after the preceding paragraphs, it will not survive extraction.

4. Phrase headings as real questions

Use headings that match how people actually ask, such as "How much does a GEO audit cost?" rather than "Pricing". Retrieval matches the semantics of the question, so headings that mirror question phrasing improve the match.

5. Publish comprehensive coverage

ChatGPT tends to favor sources that treat a topic thoroughly rather than thin pages targeting a single keyword. Depth signals that a page can answer follow-up questions, which makes it a safer source to ground an answer in.

Comprehensive does not mean padded. Cover the sub-questions a reader would actually ask next, and cut anything that exists only to hit a word count.

6. Add structured data

Mark up your pages with Article, FAQPage, Organization, and BreadcrumbList schema. Structured data removes ambiguity about what your content is, who wrote it, and what questions it answers.

Ensure the markup matches visible page content. Schema describing content that is not on the page is a policy violation, not a shortcut.

7. Attribute and date everything

Show a named author with relevant credentials, a publication date, and a last-updated date on every substantive page. These signals help break ties between otherwise comparable sources.

8. Build third-party corroboration

Mentions on sites you do not control — directories, review platforms, industry publications, community discussions — corroborate that your organization exists and is credible. This carries more weight than any claim on your own domain.

9. Keep important pages fresh

Review high-value pages on a regular cycle and make substantive updates. Recency matters most for topics that change, and a last-updated date backed by real changes is a meaningful signal.

Updating the date without updating the content is not a refresh, and it is easy to detect.

10. Track your citations and iterate

Test a fixed list of prompts in ChatGPT weekly and record whether you were cited, in what position, and alongside whom. Patterns in what gets cited tell you which formats to produce more of.

Frequently asked questions

Can you pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

There is no advertising product that places a brand into ChatGPT's cited sources. Visibility comes from being indexed, retrievable, and genuinely useful on the question being asked.

Why does ChatGPT cite my competitor but not me?

The most common reasons are that your site is not indexed in Bing, an AI crawler is blocked at the CDN, or your content does not contain a cleanly extractable answer to the question being asked. Check those in that order.

How long until ChatGPT picks up changes?

It depends on re-crawl and re-index cycles rather than a fixed schedule. Technical fixes that unblock crawlers can take effect within days; content restructuring generally shows up over several weeks.
